2015-2016 Funding Allotments
In June 2015, the Red Deer Regional Catholic Education Foundation announced funding for 20 school based projects ($42,370) and three Division projects ($7,630) for a total of $50,000. In addition to funding these projects, the Foundation will award $2,500 in student scholarships during the fall of 2015.
1. École Camille J. Lerouge School - Religious Leaders Retreat
This project will allow approximately 350 Grade 6, 7 and 8 students to attend grade-specific Faith Retreats that help to build faith-based leadership skills. $5,260 has been allotted towards this initiative.
2. École Camille J. Lerouge School – B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L Girls Program
Grade 6 girls at this school are encouraged to participate in this program which stands for “Brave, Elegant, Assertive, Unique, Talented, Important, Fabulous, Uplifting, Lovable.” This group meets once a week and focuses on healthy relationships, healthy eating, establishing a healthy body image, healthy socializing and supports the student faith journey. $1,000 has been allotted towards this ongoing initiative at this school.
3. Father Henri Voisin School – Maker Room
Grade 3, 4 and 5 students at this school will benefit from the creation of a Maker Room. This special room will help enable students to create 21st-century products using a variety of hands-on materials for their various Project Based Learning assignments. $1,200 has been allotted towards the purchase of materials to assist with this project.
4. Father Henri Voisin School - Student Leadership
Grade 5 students will be given leadership training to help at recess and to help organize school celebrations. $1,000 has been allotted towards this Student Leadership initiative, which includes a faith team, a health squad, a spirit group, a library group and a general helper group. The entire student population at this school will benefit from these Grade 5 leadership groups.
5. Father Henri Voisin School – Packing up for Literacy: Literacy Mentors
Grade 5 students at this school will be asked to choose a book and create engaging activities related to the book to help mentor younger students. $400 has been allotted towards this initiative.
6. St. John Paul II Catholic Outreach School – Faith Centre & Stations of the Cross
This school will help celebrate our Faith by purchasing the Stations of the Cross and other special symbols for its Faith Centre. $1,000 has been allotted towards the purchase of these important Catholic symbols.
7. École Secondaire Notre Dame High School – Dual Language Books
The English Language Learner population at this school will benefit from the addition of dual language fiction and non-fiction books in the Tagalog, Spanish, Tingrinya and Ukrainian languages. $2,500 has been allotted towards the purchase of these books.
8. École Secondaire Notre Dame High School – Senior Boys Basketball Tournament
The Cougar Classic Tournament at École Secondaire Notre Dame High School will receive $1,000 in funding to allow the Senior Boys Basketball team to include a Saturday Mass and breakfast prepared by The Knights of Columbus.
9. École Secondaire Notre Dame High School – Bridging the Gap
The school’s Knowledge and Employability English and Social Studies classes will receive $900 to help student’s bridge the gap between this age demographic and the elderly in Red Deer. Seniors from Victoria Park will meet regularly with students and participate in activities that are designed to foster relationship building, mentoring, empathy, compassion and communication.
10. École Our Lady of the Rosary School – Building Christian Character Centre
This mobile technology centre will be a valuable addition to the school’s Learning Commons. It will include iPad’s, sitting cushions, faith books, puzzles and a set of Bible characters in the form of puppets. $2,500 has been allotted towards the purchase of the necessary start up costs for this Building Christian Character Centre.
11. St. Francis of Assisi Middle School – Faith Retreats
Grade 7 and 8 students at this school will benefit from attending a Faith Retreat at Our Lady of Victory Camp where they will learn what it means to become an active Catholic community member in our schools, families, church and community. $5,430 has been allotted to help fund these Faith Retreats.
12. St. Gabriel Online School – Outdoor Adventure Leadership Program
High School students from St. Gabriel Online School will join students from École Secondaire Notre Dame High School and St. Dominic Catholic High School for an Outdoor Adventure Leadership Program. This is a blended learning program that will focus on building student resilience, emotional and cognitive competence, social connectivity, as well as physical capability. $4,500 will go towards the initial start-up costs of purchasing equipment and will also assist in covering some of the trip costs.
13. St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School – Faith Based Classroom Libraries
The Grade 4 and 5 classrooms at this school will receive $850 towards the purchase of faith-based books. These books will benefit current and future students in both literacy and faith development.
14. St. Marguerite Bourgeoys School – Faith Based Classroom Libraries
Grade 6, 7, 8 and 9 students will benefit from an assortment of Faith based books in their classroom libraries. $1,130 has been allotted towards the purchase of these books.
15. St. Patrick’s Community School – Increasing Interest and Reading Comprehension
Middle School students at this school will benefit from the purchase of books to stock their classroom libraries, allowing students a variety of books to read throughout the day. $2,500 has been allotted towards the purchase of new books for Middle School classroom libraries.
16. St. Patrick’s Community School – Breakfast Program
The Breakfast Program at this school has been a great success with teacher’s noticing an increase in student focus after using this program. The student population at this school will benefit from $3,000 towards their Breakfast Program.
17. St. Patrick’s Community School – Drama Production, “Scrooge”
Approximately 50 students at this school will be involved in a dramatic production of “Scrooge” adapted by Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. $2,000 has been allotted towards this production to aide in the purchase of the script, sound and lighting systems, costumes and various props.
18. St. Teresa of Avila School – Bible-based Home Reading Program
Kindergarten students at this school will benefit from the availability of Bible stories in the school’s Home Reading Library. $500 has been allotted towards the purchase of Bible-related books.
19. St. Teresa of Avila School – Grade 2 Bible Project
The Grade 2 classrooms at this school will benefit from the purchase of eighty Bibles. $2,400 has been allotted towards this purchase, knowing that the Bibles will be utilized regularly.
20. St. Thomas Aquinas Middle School – Faith Retreats
Approximately 450 students in Grade 6 to 9 at this school will have the opportunity to participate in a grade specific Faith Retreat throughout the school year. $3,300 has been allotted towards these four retreats at Our Lady of Victory Camp with NET (National Evangelization Team) Ministries.
Division Wide Initiatives
21. RDCRS READS 2015 Summer Reading Program
This new RDCRS READS Summer Reading Program is an exciting way to encourage our students to read throughout the summer months. Ten of our schools have chosen to participate in this program with approximately 2,300 students involved in the summer of 2015. $4,500 has been allotted towards this program. 22. Grow Boys 2016
This is a day-long, collaborative effort between Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, Red Deer Public Schools, and the City of Red Deer, where Grade 5 boys experience a variety of activities under the mentorship of high school boys. Approximately 200 Grade 5 boys from our schools will attend this event. $1,630 has been allotted towards this program.
23. Go Girls 2016
All RDCRS Grade 5 girls will join Red Deer Public Schools for an amazing one-day self-awareness event. Young women from École Secondaire Notre Dame High School will be involved as mentors. $1,500 has been allotted towards this event.
